The real question is: why did you think that MS-DOS Kermit was the
appropriate Kermit software for Windows 98 in the first place? I think
our website is pretty clear about which Kermit program is appropriate
for which OS, and why. Jeff listed some of the reasons in his response.
Also see:
http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/msk95.html
as well as our FAQs, the MS-DOS Kermit web page, and the K95 Web page.
Similarly for Kermit-32 and C-Kermit on VMS. The major reason that we
recommend C-Kermit for VMS is that Kermit-32 has not been supported by
its authors (or anybody else) since 1987. That's fifteen years ago.
Of course there are also myriad technical reasons, such as its inability
to transfer BACKUP savesets, which is what you were trying to do in
the first place.
The difference between supported and unsupported software is (surprise)
support. If unsupported software works for you, fine. If not, our
recommendation is to use supported software.
: I will also quit trying to use C-Kermit on the VAX end and go back to
: VMS Kermit32 which had no trouble talking to MS-Kermit. Dumb old me

: is just an old fashioned notion.

If you run the appropriate Kermit program for the platform, it is indeed
quite true, and we'll back you up. The reluctance of many people to pay for
Kermit 95 is perfectly understandable but if everybody felt that way, we
would not be here to answer your questions.
